Did you know that women no longer talk on the phone? At least young women. They text. The nuances of male/female interaction have been lost because now we have Blackberries. Women no longer have to learn to lie effectively over the phone. They can send you a text to blow you off or just not respond to you at all. And you can't call to try and charm them with your rapier wit or mastery of the English language. That's passe. It's like your Grandpa who still has a rotary dial. If you can't type on your phone fast enough, you lose the chance to make a joke and get her to think you're clever. The rhythm is ruined. I met up with an old classmate this weekend. I knew there was interest there and I wanted to see what would come of it. She was one of those acquaintances where you kind of circle around each other and size each other up for years until you decide to give it a go. I felt that rush of excitement. Finally! Let's see what we can do! Well, after she drunkenly told me that I was, "too smart to be following my dreams," and that, "I should be a lawyer, because I could be making 6 figures," I asked her point blank if she would rather she me be rich and a lawyer, or happy and following my muse. She picked the former. And she meant it! Because her rich (and miserable) parents and her overprivileged (and also miserable) friends would never accept me because my aspirations are not respectable (i.e. lucrative). The sad thing is I know this woman had potential. I saw glimmers of it. But that's not enough. I don't want to be famous and I don't need to be rich. Let's face it, I'll probably be neither. That doesn't make me sad. What makes me sad is that we have become so isolated as people, so materially driven that it's hard to really connect with anyone. I want someone I can watch "Jeopardy" with. I suck at "Jeopardy". The only questions I get right are the pop culture ones. That's not the point. The point is, I ask for so little out of life and yet I feel like I can't even get that. I'm willing to put myself on the line, but I don't think the channels are open for anyone to receive the message anymore.

I run Invisible Hands Music, London indie label, home of Thomas Dolby, (ex Strangler) Hugh Cornwell and the (reformed with new singer) Jam.

Our roster has included various other artists, and we had a stock clearout the other day, put boxes of old stock on the pavement with various charming variations of "Take me, I'm free" written on. The CDs were mostly by a semi-well known Britpop band, six Top 40 singles in their heyday. And in any case, great packaging, titles etc. I could watch out the office window (in a hip street, 120,000 rock n roll-friendly visitors each day of every weekend) how people reacted to the giveaway. The vast majority of people who stopped would pick up a CD, look at it, flip it over, look at it a bit more, then put it back. Even in the one street in Europe most devoted to the pursuit of the rock n roll dream, you literally can't give away the physical product any more. Even though, as an indie label, I rely on shipping physical product, I couldn't help giggle at the idiots at the majors who think there's a future in selling recorded music, esp in CD form. It's laughable. They should put a few boxes of one of their great new bands out on the street and see how the public feel about their crappy bands.

I'd like to thank everyone for a very successful year so far in the world of Nine Inch Nails. I'm enjoying my couple of weeks off between legs of our Lights In The Sky tour and got to thinking... "wouldn't it be fun to send out a survey to everyone that's shown interest in NIN?" Well, that's not exactly how it went, but regardless - here it is. As we've moved from the familiar world of record labels and BS into the unknown world of doing everything yourself, we've realized it would benefit us and our ability to interact with you if we knew more about what you want, what you like, what you look like naked, etc. I know it's a pain in the ass but we'd truly appreciate it if you'd take a minute and help us out. As an incentive, everyone who completes the survey will be able to download a video of live performance from this most recent tour (and I know what's going through your little minds right now: "I'll just grab this off a torrent site and not have to fill out the survey!!!" and guess what? It's not about the gotcha moment, topless and drunk at the beach, but the events that caused them to write these songs, their and ultimately our personal truth. How did they get from here to there? What can we learn from the journey? Sure, there's fame involved, but also reverence.
To be revered you have to get in bed with your audience. You cannot keep people at arm's length. You don't belong to your record company, to radio, but your fans. This doesn't mean you have to be without edge, just that you know without this relationship you've got nothing. Truly. Listen to the country stars. Not only do they thank their fans from the stage, they tend to be available, whether it be at Fan Fair or another event. The audience thinks they own them. And rewards them with longevity. I don't think I own Mariah Carey. Or Madge. Or Fitty. I think the dollar owns them.
They're beholden to the money and the fame. And they feel entitled to continued success. But it doesn't work that way, we determine whether you get to continue to play. Live Nation may say Madonna's tour is an almost instant sellout, but they don't tell you they had two additional dates on hold in Boston, that will never go on sale.
This music is not evanescent. It's part of our collection. We carry it in various formats, everything from vinyl to cassette to MP3... Not that we truly need a copy, because it's embedded in our brain, our DNA, it's part of us.

That's what the classic acts had over today's...belief. Sure, it was a different era, they were making it up as they went along. But maybe that's why we stayed with them, we felt part of it. yo opino...sobre musica y cultura de CR

Es mi opinion (la cual simplemete ofrezco para su consideracion, no mas) que en este pais tenemos cierta carencia de autenticidad...veamos: 1) Porque aqui no hay musica folclorica, si si ya se la marimba y eso, pero primero que nada me gustaria contarles de la vez que me baje de un avion en Guatemala y me recibieron 3 chapinsitos con una marimba gigante en pleno lobby del aeropuerto, que lindo no?!? Ademas quien en este pais disfruta de esa musica, quien a ver?? bueno podriamos imaginarnos disfrutando de unos Tango Viejos o un rico Flamenco clasico o de una Luna Liberiana version swing (lease cumbia) ?? Me parece que no. (Y mejor ni hablo de la cultura culinaria porque hasta aqui llegamos... podria seguir escribiendo)
Entonces, no tenemos punto de partida para evolucionar, llevamos toda una vida (corta por cierto) tratando de hacer nuestros los ritmos que recogemos de afuera, o sea al revez de los otros paises aculturizados que lo que hacen es adaptar sus inluencias extranjeras a lo que ya tienen. No digo que esto no se haga en otras areas (mas tipo de comercios y eso), no soy un radical, mucho menos un izquierdista jaja! solo que en el campo de la musica si estamos weizos en este sentido.
Ampliando un poco mas el espectro de analisis y entrando ya en una sociologia mas nacional, ultimamente me da vueltas en la cabeza la idea del valiverguismo tico, del pura vida! Ah! eso si es autentico ah... pues mira que bien! no en serio me parece bien...el unico problema es que a veces (tal vez por ser una nacion todavia joven y con culturas prestadas) no sabemos muy bien como aplicar el "principio pura vida". El "principio pura vida" (jaja) es para mi es sentimiento de: relax mop, todo va a salir bien, pura vida, don't worry be happy, pura birra, oh yeah, yico yico! , en toas! Para mercadear turismo nos sirve de maravilla pero para resolver problemas a veces nos encontramos en un limbo entre una situacion que nos pone por encima (estoy relajado, todo se solucionara, a mi me vale y estoy cool y ud preocupado esta mamando) y una situacion de mediocridad, de dejar todo para despues, de no hacer las cosas bien o hacerlas a lo que salga, de pensar que somos LA MAMA cuando apenas es una ilusion, creada por el mismo sentimiento de -estoy pura vida. Entonces amigos ya saben, hay que tener cuidado a la hora de aplicar el "principio pura vida" no vayamos a caer en lo mismo de siempre y no poder evolucionar a algo mas prospero y agradable para los que vienen atras nuestro!
Lo cual me lleva al punto de partida que es que carecemos de autenticidad en nuestra musica y para colmos nos conformamos alabando los grupos caseros que suenan a otros grupos de afuera... wow que cool!!! por favor... ya es hora de madurar... por extension reciba un saludo my man Castillo que lo que hace es verdaderamente "hecho en casa" .
Los ticos somos un buen publico para las bandas grandes de afuera, un publico sediento y agradecido, rico si! pero cuando se trata de bandas nacionales nuestro sentido critico simplemente caput!

La pagina vibratica.com ha sido toda una odisea para mi. Llevo unos 8 meses tal vez trabajando en la idea, que cada vez se torna menos abstracta, mas real y tangible, auqnue constantemente stamos agregando cualidades y proyectos a futuro hoy por hoy hay unos 30 contratos firmados que incluye musica muy diversa...si yo se que es poco pero es algo, una vez que salga la pagina y la gente y los artistas la vean muchos van a querer participar. La verdad que en Vibratica creemos en el apoyo y la igualdad de condiciones para la musica nacional asi que con esta herrameinta pretendemos brindar justamente eso. Nos interesa dar "customer service" a los cantautores y bandas: ayudarle a producir eventos y grabaciones, conectarlos mejor con sus fans, distribuirles la musica, etc ... con esto que ganamos? es simple, trafico. A mi me cuesta trabajo entender como es posible que en otros paises no se vean iniciativas similares...por que todo el mundo tiene que depender de iTunes y MySpace si esta tan enfocado al mercado de USA. Sera por que Costa Rica cuenta con una industria de la musica tan descalabrada que este modelo "tan" innovador podria funcar. Digo aqui nadie tiene contratos discograficos, toda la musica esta "libre" mientras que en los demas paises latinos con escenas musicales mas fuertes o con mas proyeccion internacional los artistas grandes estan firmados y son muy comerciales, los demas estan mamando. Si mamando! En cambio en CR como no hay disqueras del todo pues la unica forma es hacerlo Indie y no nos damos cuenta que hoy en dia es la mejor forma, que las disqueras no han querido acoplarse al cambio. Digo como es posible que no tengan sus propias tiendas en linea donde vendan su musica. Tiene que llegar un pringao como yo a tratar de rocopilar toda esa musica y ponerla a disposicion del publico, porque mucha de esta musica ni siquiera se consigue en un P2P network (limewire, etc) Asi que me estoy adjudicando la tarea de hacer una discoteca virtual de musica costarricense, ya pueden imaginarse la magnitud de tal tarea cuando se trata de TODA la musica costarricense que se haya grabado sin importar el genero o la fecha y cuando toda ella esta libre en el aire, ninguna entidad la controla, ninguna disquera, ninguna editorial, ninguna productora, sera posible que Vibratica se establezca llegue a ser ese portal al mundo de la musica tica?

Hace poco en Semana U se presento Bit-0 (mi laptop mi bajo y yo) hace un par de anios que no salia al publico con este proyecto sin embargo he estado componiendo musica en casa, para alguna dia sacarla... Se me presento la oportunidad en la UCR asi que lo hice...el sonido no era muy bueno y mis track todavia estan un poco crudos pero stuvo bien, se disfruto...mucho solo de bajo! jaja

Tango India

Es una etapa interesante con Tango india, he tomado un poco mas el rol de productor dentro del grupo...consiguiendo chivos y ayudando a producir las nuevas piezas... digo interesante no por mi jaja si no porque la etapa que esta pasando el grupo es especial. Afrontamos un reto enorme que es cumplir con las expectativas del publico y ni que decir de las nuestras... Despues de estar fuera de la escena por casi 7 anos , no podemos volver tocando los "viejos hits" ocupamos uno nuevo que nos reposicione con la nueva generacion...si logramos que la gente vaya a nuestros conciertos no solo a escuchar las canciones que ya conocen si no tambien las nuevas ahi si lograriamos mantenernos a flote...En fin el material ni se ha empezado a grabar, solo hay maquetas por ahora...yo me inclino a algo mas comercial rock pop...sin embargo me parece que la tendencia del grupo es mas eclectica..dejando que las harmonias fluyan casi sin ningun orden...o con un orden eclectico. Yo creo que deberia de ser musica al menos un par de canciones bastante amigables para con la radio, al estilo Esperare (me refiero en cuanto a la estructura no al ritmo) Sin embargo yo creo que el grupo tiene potencial, pero lastimosamente carece de cabeza, se hace todo muy libre un poco a lo que salga...lastima... Bueno por ahora no hay chivos programados ahi culquier cosa posteo
